Teacher vs. Student Interview

Raewyn Reid vs. Kallie Murray

All in session for the MGT Academy! Interview 2. Here is a recap: MGT Academy is all about choosing 1 promising MGT camper and placing them under the tutorial wing of the MGT pro coaches to get a head start on pursuing a snowboard career in 2010. Now it’s down to the final exam. The final exam is an oral; a conversation between pro and am to explore each other’s craniums. The 2nd interview kicks off with pro rider Raewyn Reid and Academy nominee Kallie Murray. Read on as Raewyn's brain, made up of a combination of many years of intense schooling, sugar and wizard's dust, joins up with Kallie's brain.

RAEWYN: Hello Kallie Murray! How are you? What have you been up to?
KALLIE: Hello Raewyn Reid! I'm just dandy. I've been in Sandpoint, ID for the past two weeks wakeboarding and wake surfing my little heart out. It’s been a blast!

RAEWYN: So you are an Alberta OG? Did you grow up in Dead Rear… I mean Red Deer? What was that like?
KALLIE: Original Alberta gangster fo' sho' , born and raised. My favorite part of growing up in Red Deer is that it is not too big or too small; it’s just the right size. You don’t have monster traffic like in Calgary and you don’t have the know everything about everyone like in some small towns.

RAEWYN: Tell us about the first time you ever went snowboarding.
KALLIE: Well, the first time I ever went snowboarding I was determined to get my very own set up so I saved up my cash money and bought a mole board with Lamar bindings. I was so nervous to actually go out and finally do it. The chair lift looked like a death trap so I felt the tow rope was more suitable. I was dragged up the tow rope… let’s just say a pillow strapped to my butt would have been a good idea. But I began to get the hang of it …got down the bunny hill and have been hooked ever since.

RAEWYN: Tell us about the most recent time you went snowboarding.
KALLIE: I think the most recent time I went snowboarding would have been MGT in April. MGT is awesome I always feel like I improve there every year. I remember when you taught me how to 270 onto the box. I couldn’t have been more stoked!! The pro riders just give you that extra motivation to ride like them!

RAEWYN: My favorite athlete is Terry Fox. My best friend Lindsay says that Terry Fox doesn’t count but I think that she is terribly mistaken. How do you feel about Terry Fox? Who is your favorite athlete?
KALLIE: I agree he is such an athlete! Running across Canada with a prosthetic leg, now that’s an athlete! I think that is incredible and to top it all off he raised a ton of money for cancer. I would say my favorite athlete would be the figure skater Jamie Sale. When I (figure)skated I thought she was the most amazing skater! Now I see, and respect, all the time and hard work that figure skaters spend to get where they are, which is the same in basically every sport. She is from Red Deer too to top it all off!

RAEWYN:  Describe snowboarding in one word:
KALLIE: Supercalafragalistic!!

RAEWYN:  Have you seen the new Harry Potter movie? Did you think Dumbledore had it coming?
KALLIE: That’s actually one on my list of things to see. I’m so behind in movie watching! I haven’t even seen the Hangover yet. But I do think Dumbledore always had it coming! Being all ‘high and mighty’!

RAEWYN:  If President Obama were to grant you any wish, what would you wish for? Feel free to elaborate, the man is going to give you anything you want!
KALLIE: I would probably wish for global warming to stop. I mean I don’t wanna sound like a pageant queen but what about all the SNOW!! No powder days would make me feel all sad inside or not enough snow to make a kicker. I think I’m tearing up. And if he gave me one more wish (which he would ‘cause it’s Obama!) I would ask for snow passes to be free. Mee like free.

RAEWYN:  Would you rather inherit the Force and become a Jedi Knight? Or inherit a lottery ticket and become a millionaire?
KALLIE: I would rather inherit the Force and become a Jedi Knight. If you become a millionaire you just buy stuff and run out of money. But the Force will never run out and I get a really cool light sword. Plus I would get a big furry man-like friend!

RAEWYN:  How do you feel about fashion crimes?
KALLIE: I actually admire people who try to pull off unique wacky fashion cause they have a ton of confidence to rock out in something that is apparently a “don’t” in the fashion world but they make it work just in how they carry themselves. I think it’s rad!

RAEWYN:  Anything else you would like to say on the record?
KALLIE: For the record I’d just like to say that I’m super stoked on being chosen to participate in the MGT Academy. I like having a good time, laughing, meeting new people and having new experiences. I get the excitement of all these things when I’m doing the one thing I’m truly passionate about, snowboarding! And I’ll be doing it till my oldness won’t let me!
